Is the US still the "Land of Opportunity"?

I just read an article stating that more and more immigrants are leaving the US and returning to their homelands, so that they can enjoy more opportunities and a higher standard of living. Is the US's status as the "Land of Opportunity" now a thing of the past? Also, will more people start emigrating from the US to other countries as a result of the economic downturn?
