Is wisdom teeth extraction normally painful?

I got all 4 of my wisdom teeth extracted at once on monday. My god I'm in pain. The left side of jaw is swollen. I can barely open my mouth. I gargle with salt water 3 times a day. I've been taking vicodin and ibuprofen. I'm thinking about making a follow up appointment with my dentist. Plus I'm going on vaction in two days! My best friend suggested I rinse with peroxide. Help!
